Abstract:
PURPOSE:To correct the length of coupling as designed by varying the refractive index of the light guide layer part between the two rib parts to vary the state of an electrtic field coupling between two rib parts. CONSTITUTION:When a clad layer consists of two parallel rib parts 15a and 15b, a Shottky type electrode 21 is provided on the light guide layer part between those ribs 15a and 15b on condition that the two rib parts 15a and 15b of the clad layer are connected by a thin film. Thus, the Shottky type electrode 21 is provided above the light guide layer part between those ribs 15a and 15b, so a voltage can be applied between the Shottky type electrode 21 and an electrode provided on the reverse surface of a semiconductor substrate for optical switch driving. Therefore, when the voltage is applied, the refractive index of the light guide layer part between the two ribs 15a and 15b, i.e., the refractive index of the coupling part varies according to the level of the voltage.
