To manufacture a GI type plastic optical fiber superior in heat resistance.
The optical fiber 11 includes a cross sectionally circular core 12 and a clad 13 on the outer periphery of the core 12. The clad 13 consists of an organic polymer such as polymethyl metacrylate (PMMA). PMMA is used as a matrix polymer of the core 12. The core 11 includes a dopant having a higher refractive index than PMMA in addition to PMMA. At least any one of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 9-bromophenanthrene (BPT) is used as the dopant. A columnar preform is made so that the content of the dopant is continuously becomes smaller from the center part of a cross sectional circle of a core member of the preform to the outer periphery, and the optical fiber 11 is made when the preform is stretched in a longitudinal direction.
