To provide an optical variable wavelength buffer which buffers optical packet signals and can follow up the fluctuation in the bit rate of the optical packet signals.
This optical variable wavelength buffer includes a wavelength conversion means having a wavelength conversion element for converting the wavelength of input signal light to a different wavelength, an optical delay means having a waveguide for optical delay in which the light signal converted in the wavelength by the wavelength conversion means propagates and an optical waveguide for output for outputting the light signal propagating in the optical delay means. The light signal propagating in the optical delay means propagates in the waveguides for optical delay of the optical path length varying according to the converted wavelength.
