NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula (R1 is 6W18C alkyl or alkoxy; R2 is optically active alkyl).
EXAMPLE: (S)-2-Methylbutyl 6-(4'-n-decyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)pyridine-3- carboxylate.
USE: A display element material, stable to water and light, having improved weather resistance and capable of being a smectic liquid crystal, particularly chiral smectic C liquid crystal assuming ferroelectricity within a wide temperature range.
PREPARATION: A compound expressed by formula II and SOCl2 in an excess amount are refluxed for several hours while heating and the unreacted SOCl2 is removed by vacuum distillation to form a compound expressed by formula III, which is then reacted with an optically active compound expressed by formula IV in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. benzene, etc., in the presence of an organic base, e.g. triethylamine, etc., at room temperature or under heating condition for several hours to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
