Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new low viscosity, liquid-crystalline and colorless optically active compound and composition excellent in chemical stability and useful for optical switching elements capable of responding at high speeds in wide temperature ranges and used for displays.

CONSTITUTION: The optically active compound of formula I [R1 is F, (1-10C alkoxy group-substituted) 1-18C alkyl; X is single bond,-O-; m is 0, 1, preferably 0; when m is 1, the ring A is (mono-or difluorinated) 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4- cyclohexylene, etc., the ring B and the ring C are independently (mono-or difluorinated) 1,4-phenylene, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; R2 is 1-18C alkyl, * is asymmetric carbon[. For example, (S)-2-[4-(4-fluorodecyl)phenyl]-5-decylpyrimidine. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting an aromatic halide of formula II (Z is Br, I) with a 1-alkyn-4-ol, reacting the produced compound with a fluorinated agent, and subsequently catalytically hydrogenating the triple bond of the reaction product.
