Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [n is 0 or 1; R1 is 3-14C alkyl; R2 and R3 are 1-3C alkyl; R4 is 1-10C alkyl; Q1-Q3 are single bond, ether bond, carboxylic acid ester bond, carbonyl bond or carbonyldioxy bond; M is group of formula II or III (X and Y are single bond, carboxylic acid ester bond, ethyl ene bond, etc.; ring A - ring C are the same or different six-membered-1,4-diyl)].

EXAMPLE: 4'-Octyloxy-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid 4-[(1R,2R)-2-butoxy-1- methylpropoxycarbonyl]phenyl ester.

USE: A ferrodielectric liquid crystal compound which exhibits high spontaneous polarization and has a low, wide temperature range exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase.

PREPARATION: A basic structure carboxylic acid of formula IV is dehydratively condensed with an optically active dichiral secondary alcohol in the presence of a protonic acid in an organic solvent to provide the compound of formula I.
