PURPOSE: To provide a novel and stable liquid crystalline compd. which is suitable as a component of a liquid crystalline phase or is usable for assembling a liquid crystal polymer forming a liquid crystalline phase having one laminar structure and has an extremely short response time.
CONSTITUTION: The optically active compd. of formula I (R is 1-12C alkyl or perfluoroalkyl wherein L or two of CH2 or CF2 may be replaced by O, CO, CH=CH, CH halogen, CHCN, etc., or 1-12C alkyl which can have a chemically reactive group at its terminal position; A1 and A2 are each 1,4-phenylene; 1,4- cyclohexylene, 1,4-piperidiyl,2,6-naphthalinediyl, etc., A3 is (substd.) phenyl; Z is -CO-. -O-CO-O-. CH2CH2, OCH2, C≡C, single bond, etc.; (m) is 0 to 3). The polymer contg. a compd. of formula Ib7 and a compd. of formula IId7 which are one kind of the compd. of the formula I is obtd. by the reaction complying with the reaction formula using the chiral phenoxypropionic acid of formula VII as a starting material.
