NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound expressed by formula I (Z is atom or atomic group other than H).
EXAMPLE: An optically active substance of 1,3-bis(9-anthryl)propan-1-ol.
USE: Utilizable in the information industry as an optical memory material, etc., and having wide utilization value as a reagent for optical resolution utilizing crystallinity thereof, etc.
PREPARATION: 9-Anthraldehyde is condensed with 9-acetylanthracene under basic condition to give a compound expressed by formula II, which is then reduced with sodium boron hydride to afford the above-mentioned exemplified compound expressed by formula III. The racemic modification can be separated into the S-isomer and R-isomer by column chromatorgraphy using a cellulosic derivative, e.g. cellulose triphenylcarbamate, etc., as a stationary phase and OH group thereof is converted into OR, OCOR, OCONHR, etc., (R is 1W6C alkyl, etc.) or methanesulfonic acid ester, etc., and can be substituted by N, S, etc.
