PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal display material especially excellent in responsiveness and memory characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: The compound is expressed by formula I (R1 is (substituted) alkyl; X is a single bond, O, S, etc.; Y is OCO, COO, etc.; Z is COO, Ch2O; R2 is alkyl; ring A and Ring B are 1,4-phenylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl etc.; (m) is 0 or 1; (n) is 1 or 2). E.g. (2S,4R) and (2R,4R)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2methyl-4- decanolide. A compound of formula I can be obtained by subjecting a compound of formula II to react with a carboxylic acid of formula III in the presence of a condensing agent (e.g. dicyclohexyl carbodiimide). A liquid crystal compound capable of responsing at high speed in a wide range of temperature can be obtained, as a large spontaneous polarization is induced by adding only a small amount of the compound of formula I in a mother liquid crystal composition. It us colorless and excellent in water resistance, light resistance and especially chemical stability.
