Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide novel strong ferroelectric liquid crystal compounds exhibiting optical and chemical stabilities, high-speed switching characteristic and high spontaneous polarization.
CONSTITUTION: The optically active liquid crystal compound of formula I [wherein A represents O or S; B represents -(CH2)m- or -(CH2)n-O- (wherein m is o to 4; n is of 2 to 5); R represents a 1-22C alkyl or alkoxy; R' represents a 2-8C alkyl or ether; k and l is of 0 or 1; C and D are each H or a halogen; *represents a chiral center], for example of compound of formula II, is provided by reacting a compound of formula III with a compound of formula IV to obtain a compound of formula V and reacting it with a compound of formula VI.
