NEW MATERIAL:The optically active compound of formula I (R is 1W18C alkyl; C* is asymmetric C; R1 is 4W18C alkyl or alkoxy; X is -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH-; Z is O or S; n and l are 0 or 1; m is 1W8).
EXAMPLE: 3-(p-n-Decyloxyphenyl)propionic acid 4'-(2-ethoxypropoxy)-phenyl ester.
USE: A component of a liquid crystal composition. It is a liquid crystal compound useful for the control of liquid crystal state and effective in preventing the development of reverse domain in a TN-type cell by the addition to a nematic liquid crystal. Addition of the compound to a nematic liquid crystal or chiral nematic liquid crystal gives a chiral nematic liquid crystal which can be used as a phase-transition type or White-Taylor-type quest-host liquid crystal element.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting the compound of formula II with the acid chloride of formula III, converting the resultant compound of formula IV into the compound of formula V and reacting the product with the compound of formula VI.
