Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL: Compds. of formula I [wherein R is H or methyl; R1 is alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or the like; R3 is H or donates, together with R1, a trimethylene or the like; X is O or NR4 (wherein R4 is H, alkyl or the like); and R2 donates a strongly space-filling hydrocarbon radical or the like].

EXAMPLE: N-(Meth)acryloylalanine methyl ester.

USE: Polymn. for forming optically active polymers, and adsorbent for the chromatographic separation of racemic mixtures of the optically active polymers to form antipodes.

PROCESS: An optically active amino acid deriv. of formula II or an acid-added product thereof is reacted with a (meth)acrylic acid deriv. of formula III (wherein Y is a removable group such as halogen) in the presence of an acid- binder (e.g. NaOH) in a solvent such as benzene at -78 to 100°C to obtain a compd. of formula I.
