PURPOSE: To obtain a novel compound having chemical stability, resistant to discoloration, exhibiting excellent light stability and quick response and useful, e.g. as a liquid crystal material for display element or electrooptical element.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of the formula I [R1 is 3-20C alkyl; R2 is (substituted) 1-10C alkyl, 1-10C alkyloxymethyl, etc.; R3 and R4 are H, OH, 1-10C alkyloxy or 1-10C acyloxy; R3 and R4 may together form an epoxy group; R5 is H or 1-20C alkyl; X1 is COO, OCO, O or single bond; X2 is COO, OCO, CH2O, etc.; X3 is COO, O, etc.; X4 is O or OCO; * represents asymmetric carbon; A and B are group containing (substituted) 6-membered ring; (n) is 0 or 1], e.g. (2S, 3R, 4R, 5R, 6R)-tetrahydro-3,4-epoxy-2-methoxy-6-methyl-5-(4'- hexyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)pyran. The compound of the formula I can be produced, e.g. by reacting a compound of the formula II (Hal is halogen) with a compound of the formula III.
