PURPOSE: To obtain the subject derivative, composed of an optically active trifluoromethylcyclopropane derivative and capable of providing a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition, capable of inducing great spontaneous polarization by adding a small amount thereof to a matrix liquid crystal and responsive within a wide range of temperatures.
CONSTITUTION: A trifluoromethylcyclopropanecarboxylic acid ester derivative expressed by formula I (R3 is 1-10C alkyl; R5' is 1-10C alkyl) is hydrolyzed and then made to react with an optically active alcohol expressed by the formula R4OH (R4 is 4-16C optically active alkyl, etc.) to provide an optically active cyclopropane derivative, which is then reduced and subsequently allowed to react with an alkyl halide in the presence of a base to remove the protecting group of hydroxyl group to afford an optically active phenolic derivative expressed by formula II (R2 is 1-18C alkyl, etc.). The resultant phenolic derivative is then made to react with a carboxylic acid expressed by formula III [R$1 is F, (substituted)1-18C alkyl, etc.; X is single bond, O, CO, etc.; ring A and B are (substituted)phenylene, cyclohexylene, etc.; m is 0 or 1] in the presence of a condensing agent to afford the objective compound expressed by formula IV.
