To facilitate the production of an optically anisotropic film and to improve the display characteristic of a liq. crystal display by applying the film to the display by incorporating a specified amt. of at least one kind selected from among specified compds. and orienting the optical axes of the film at a specified angle to the normal of the film on the average.
This optically anisotropic film contains at least 50wt.% of one kind selected from the compds. shown by the formula, and the optical axes of the film are oriented at an angle of 0-90° to the normal of the film on the average. In the formula, A to F are independently 1-22C hydrocarbo groups, heterocyclic compd. groups or a specified group, X1 to X6 are independently -O-, -S-, -COO- or -OCO-, and (a) to (f) are independently 0 or 1.
