To provide an optically anisotropic substance usable as an optical retardation film excellent in durability by avoiding contamination in rubbing thereby solving the problem that only alignment parallel to the traveling direction of a film is imparted.
In the optically anisotropic substance, a layer (A) containing a compound represented by formula (1) and having liquid crystal aligning ability produced upon photoirradiation and a polymer layer (B) obtained by polymerizing a liquid crystal compound having a polymerizable group in a state aligned by the layer (A) are covalently bonded and stacked. In the formula, R1 and R2 each represents a polymerizable group; X1 represents a single bond or a linking group comprising a combination of a divalent hydrocarbon group with -O-, -CO-O-, -OCO-, -CONH-, -NHCO-, -NHCO-O- or -OCONH-; and Y represents a group having an azobenzene, anthraquinone, benzophenone, cinnamoyl, chalcone or coumarin group.
