Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide optically-based stimulation of target cells and modifications thereto, and particularly, various methods and devices of using light to stimulate target cells in vitro.SOLUTION: The present invention includes step-function opsins (SFOs) in which at least one of C128 and D156 is substituted, a light-activated molecule as one example, a modification to a location near the all-trans retinal Schiff base thereof, i.e., extending the duration of an open state, and a method for ion channels or pumps or for controlling currents in a cell (e.g., in environments in vivo and in vitro).
