To provide an orally administrable composition useful for prevention or amelioration of arthritis or arthropathia, and containing an alkaline earth metal salt such as a calcium salt by elucidating an inhibitory factor of the preventing and ameliorating effects of the arthritis or arthropathia by the alkaline earth metal salt such as the calcium salt.

The orally administrable composition contains (1) an extract of the following plant and (2) the alkaline earth metal salt such as the calcium salt: Fuscoporia obliqua of Polyporaceae; Rhodiolarosea L. of Crassulaceae; Eucommia ulmoides of Araliaceae; Isodon japonicus Hara of Labiatae; Mallotus japonicus Mueller-Arg of Euphorbiaceae; Melilotus officinalis (L.) Lam. of Leguminosae; Echinacea pallida of Asteraceae; Crataegus cuneata of Rosaceae; Eucommia ulmoides of Eucommiaceae; Phaeophyceae; Chlorophyceae; and Rhodophyceae.
