To provide an organic EL element having a high environmental resistance, in which deterioration of characteristics due to elapse of time caused by invasion of moisture or the like can be prevented in a light emitting element used for a light emitting type display or the like.

In an organic EL element including a protection layer covering an organic layer pinched at least between electrodes, the protection layer is laminated and composed of silicon atom not containing oxygen atom, nitrogen atom, and fluorine atom, while the content of the fluorine contained in the layer is made to be 0.1% to 1.0% in the outermost surface layer.
