To solve a problem that cost is increased due to the increase of the number of parts when adopting a configuration in which an exclusive light receiving element such as a phototransistor is provided in the outside of a panel to detect the brightness in the surroundings.

In this organic EL display device according to this invention having a display picture element region 11 composed by arranging light emitting picture elements including an organic EL element like matrix, the organic EL element is arranged as the light receiving element so as to surround the display picture element region 11 on the same basic plate as the display picture element region 11 to form a light receiving picture element region 12. The brightness in the surroundings in the display picture element region 11 is detected by the organic EL element in the light receiving picture element region 12. Light emitting luminance is controlled by controlling light emitting time of the organic EL element (light emitting picture element) in the display picture element region 11 based on the detected output.
