To provide an organic electroluminescent element constituting a planar light-emitting unit capable of emitting a large amount of light, in which a non-light emitting region is hardly recognized and an excellent appearance and a high illuminating performance are achieved, and which is easy to manufacture.
The organic electroluminescent element includes a translucent substrate 1 formed with an organic light emitting element 10 having a first electrode 7, an organic light-emitting layer 8, and a second electrode 9. The organic light emitting element 10 is sealed being covered by a transparent sealing substrate 2. A light-emitting area has a polygonal shape in a planar view. The organic light emitting element 10 includes an opaque end portion 4a formed with an electrode terminal 3 and a transparent end portion 4b formed with no electrode terminal 3. In the end portion 4, a step 5 for being overlapped with the end portion 4 of another organic electroluminescent element is formed. The step 5 includes a substrate step 5a concaved in a step shape in the opaque end portion 4a and a sealing step 5b concaved in a step shape in the transparent portion 4b.
