To provide an organic electroluminescent element which adopts a light emitting layer containing phosphorescent dopants so as to be improved in luminous efficacy and service life.
The organic electroluminescent element has the light emitting layer located between a pair of electrodes, the light emitting layer contains the phosphorescent dopants and a host, and (i) a charge transfer compound (preferably, a carbazole based compound) and (ii) one or more compounds selected from an oxadiazole compound, a phenanthroline based compound, a triazine based compound, and a triazole based compound are contained as the above host in the light emitting layer. By this setup, a mixture of a hole transfer material and an electron transfer material is used as the host of a phosphorescent device when the light emitting layer is formed, whereby the organic electroluminescent element can be improved in luminous efficacy and service life without additionally forming a hole stopping layer.
