To improve the luminous characteristics of an organic electroluminescent element and the photosensitivity of a photoreceptor by using an organic film comprising a specified phenanthridine derivative for the hole transfer layer or luminescent layer.
A hole injection electrode (anode) comprising an indium-tin oxide, a luminescent layer which comprises a phenanthridine derivative having diphenylamino groups, represented by formula I {wherein R1 to R3 are each alkyl (-CnH2n+1) (wherein n is 1 to 10), cyano, amino, alkoxyl, halogeno, H, or a group of formula II or III [wherein R is H or CnH2n+1 (wherein n is 1 to 10)]} and has a film thickness of about 500, an electron transfer layer which comprises an oxazole derivative of formula IV and has a film thickness of about 500, and an electron injection electrode (cathode) which comprises an Mg-In alloy (at a ratio of about 10:1) and has a film thickness of about 2,000 are formed into films in order on a transparent glass base plate to give an organic electroluminescent element. A voltage is applied to bias the hole injection electrode plus and the electron injection electrode minus.
