PURPOSE: To obtain an organic glass suitable for an optical material having low specific gravity, high refractive index and excellent impact resistance by copolymerizing a raw material having a specified viscosity and containing specific essential components such as allyl phenylbenzoate.
CONSTITUTION: This organic glass is produced by copolymerizing a raw material obtained by using (A) at least one kind of 2-, 3- or 4-phenylbenzoic acid allyl ester and (B) an oligomer having recurring unit of formula [R1 to R3 are each H or methyl; A is OCH2CH2, OCH(CH3)CH2, etc.; (p) and (q) each is 1--3; (n) is 1-6] as essential components and compounding the monomer components to get a viscosity of 5-8,000cp at 30°C. The amounts of the component A and the component B are preferably 10-40 pts.wt. and 20-80 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of the above raw material, respectively. The viscosity of the glass can be lowered without excessively lowering the refractive index of the glass by compounding $ 30 pts. wt. of styrene, o-chlorostylene, etc., to 100 pts.wt. of the raw material.
