PURPOSE: To obtain the title orientated molded body which is excellent in the cutting quality, wear resistance and heat release properties and proper for the material of a cutting tool by constituting the orientated molded body of both the particles of plate cubic boron nitride and a bonding material and also orientating BN particles to the constant direction.
CONSTITUTION: The particles of plate cubic boron nitride (hereinafter abbreviated as CBN particles) are produced by a method described here-under. Both a layer contg. cubic boron nitride with a C source (e.g. stearic acid) added thereto and a layer contg. a catalyst for synthesizing cubic boron nitride are laminated and treated at high temp. at high pressure. Then the plate CBN particles are mixed with a bonding material (e.g. Cu-Sn alloy, phenolic resin) and this mixture is charged into a mold, pressurized and molded. Thereby the molded body wherein the CBN particles are orientated to the constant direction can be produced because the plate CBN particles are nearly vertically orientated for the pressure axis. The obtained molded body is preferably utilized as a cutting tool and sliding material, etc.
