To provide a mechanism for switching the forward/backward traveling of an outboard motor having a compact structure and including a contra-rotating propeller.
This outboard motor includes a drive shaft 9, a gear mechanism 28, a fixing device 29, and a coupling device 30. The gear mechanism 28 includes a first gear 31 coupled to a first shaft 24 of the drive shaft 9, a second gear 32 coupled to the second shaft 25 of the drive shaft 9, third gears 33 arranged between the first gear 31 and second gear 32 and engaged with both the gears, and a carrier 34 configured to hold the third gear 33 so that the third gear 33 can rotate on its own axis and to be rotated around the drive shaft 9. The fixing device 29 is configured to switch the conditions of the carrier 34 between a fixed condition with the carrier 34 fixed and a non-fixed condition with fixation canceled. The coupling device 30 is configured to switch the carrier 34 between a coupled condition with the carrier 34 coupled to the second shaft 25 and a non-coupled condition with coupling canceled.
