Abstract:
To provide an outer panel/stringer structure with reduced vulnerability to sea surface cracking.SOLUTION: Each of an outer panel and a stringer is provided by arranging a ply direction (i.e. an angle of a fiber path of the ply) during lay-up in such a way that relative opening (failure mode I) and/or in-plane shear (failure mode II) and/or out-of-plane shear (failure mode III) is reduced with respect to a main load at an outer plate/stringer interface. This is possible when a coupling of multiple concrete deformation modes is deliberately encouraged rather than suppressed. The ply direction of the stringer is adjusted so that the stringer deforms in a controlled manner to suppress or "close" a crack that is about to form as load is applied, before an undesirable failure mode is formed.SELECTED DRAWING: None
