To improve safety and reliability of operation by using the value led from exhaust gas composition to detect an error in a load measuring range in a device for regulating the fuel supply quantity and air supply quantity as an engine load function.
During the operation of an engine 56, a controller 10 inputs output signals of a rotating speed measuring device 24, an exhaust gas sensor 32, a position measuring device 44 for a throttle valve 40, and the like, and sets a throttle valve position on the basis of the load measured value. The controller 10 then obtains the value of difference between the actual value and set value of the throttle valve position, compares the value of difference with the specified threshold value, and judges a device as normal in the case of the value of difference not exceeding the threshold value. In the case of the value of difference exceeding the threshold value, the controller 10 examines the λ value of exhaust gas with respect to the maximum value and/or the minimum value and judges the presence of an error in position measurement in the case of the λ value being within a specified area while judging the presence of an error in a load signal range in the case of the λ value exceeding the specified area.
