Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL: An overbased alkaline earth metal salt of a 10-13C alkyl orthoxylene sulfonic acid.
USE: An additive to a lubricating oil.
PREPARATION: An alkyl orthoxylene is reacted with a concentrated sulfuric acid, fuming sulfuric acid or the like to obtain a sulfonated product, which is mixed with an excess of an oxide or hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal (preferably Ca) in an organic solvent. In case that an overbased product is required, carbon dioxide is passed through the resultant mixture.
