PURPOSE: An alkali hypohalite is used as an oxidizing agent to effect the reaction and the waste solution containing the resultant alkali halide is subjected to electrolysis to form alkali hydroxide and halogen, then alkali hypohalite is regenerated therefrom for reuse.
CONSTITUTION: An alkali hypochlorite such as sodium hypochlorite is used as an oxidizing agent to oxidize, e.g., diacetone-L-sorbose (DAS) to acetone-2- keto-L-guronic acid (DAGA), which is used as a starting material for vitamin C. Then, the waste solution resulting from the reaction and containing alkali haloide as a by-product is recovered and its salt concentration is adjusted and electrolysis is effected in a tank to form alkali hydroxide such as sodium hydroxide and halogen such as chlorine. Then, the formed alkali hydroxside and the halogen are used to form alkali hypohalite and the product is circulated to the oxidation process.
