Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recover energy or useful work energy by expanding a pressurized oxygen reducing non-permeable gas at a temperature below the operating temperature of a membrane.
SOLUTION: An oxygen-containing gas 1 (e.g. air) is compressed in a compression area 101. The compressed feedstock 3 is at 150-350°F in an adiabatic mode. The compressed feedstock 9 is pre-heated by heating process flows 11 and 13 in a heat conversion area 103, and the feedstock 15 is introduced into a separation area 105, which consists of a final heating area 107 and an ion transport membrane area 109. A membrane 111 divides the membrane area 109 into a supply side and a permeation side, and oxygen permeates the membrane 111 selectively in the form of oxygen ion. The finally heated feedstock 17 is dispersed through the membrane to become a high purity oxygen permeate flow 13 which enters a final process 119 from a cooler 115. On the other hand, the hot, compressed non-permeate flow 11 containing 6-18% by volume oxygen is cooled in the heat converting area 103. And the non-permeate flow 11 further passes through a cooler 113 and a work recovering area 117 and is exhausted.
