PURPOSE: To safely obtain a monobasic fatty acid and a dibasic fatty acid by ozonizing a mixture of an unsaturated fatty acid ester and a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid under specific condition, thereby producing an ozonized product which is stable in storage and in oxidative decomposition reaction with oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of an unsaturated fatty acid ester of the formula CH3(CH2)n(CH=CHCH2)k(CH2)mCOOR1 (R1 is lower alkyl; (k) is 1-3; m+n is 5-13) and a fatty acid of the formula R2COOH (R2 is 5-19C alkyl or alkenyl) is ozonized under controlled condition in such a manner as to obtain a reaction product satisfying the formula Io/Im≤0.2 wherein Io is total area of proton peaks at δ=5.3 and 6.1-6.4ppm measured by 1H-NMR and Im is total area of proton peak of carboxyalkyl ester group at δ=3.6-3.8ppm. The weight ratio of (unsaturated fatty acid):(fatty acid) is 99:1 to 80:20.
