PURPOSE:To efficiently and economically produce molten iron by using not only solid material, such as scrap, but also various raw materials, such as various powdery and granular materials, just as it is as raw material for molten iron in a DC arc furnace, which can reduce electric power consumption and electrode consumption compared with a three phase AC arc furnace. CONSTITUTION:After the raw material for molten iron composed mainly of the solid material having comparatively large shape is charged from a charging hole for raw material at the top part of the DC arc furnace body 1 by shifting and opening a furnace cover 2, the furnace cover 2 is again shifted, and in the condition of closing the charging hole for raw material, while holding the lower end of a solid positive electrode 3 to the suitable position to the raw material for molten iron in the furnace body 1 from an electrode inserting hole in the furnace cover 2, the electric current is conducted to the solid positive electrode 3 to execute melting of the raw material for molten iron. Before or just after the raw material is melted down, the conduction with electric current to the solid positive electrode 3 is stopped, and while charging the powdery and granular materials into the furnace body 1 from a hollow part 4a in a hollow positive electrode 4 changed from the solid positive electrode 3, the electric current is conducted to the hollow positive electrode 4 and the raw material is melted and also smelting reduction is executed to produce the molten iron.
