Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing lactones from a saturated or an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride in high yield under mild conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Maleic anhydride is hydrogenated in a liquid-phase homogeneous system to produce γ-butyrolactone. In the process, a tertiary alcohol is added to carry out the reaction in the presence of a ruthenium compound and a bis(diarylphosphino)ferrocene.
