A shape of the winding thread portion of a package is read by an image reading means 2, and the electric signal from the image reading means 2 is converted into the image information signal suitable for the succeeding image process by an image take-in circuit 3. The image information signal from the image reading means 2 is binarized by a binarization circuit 4, and feature points of the binarized image information are extracted by a feature point extraction circuit 5. Sizes of various sections of the package are calculated from the coordinates of the feature points by a size measurement circuit 6, and the measured sizes of various sections of the package are compared with reference values set in advance by a comparison circuit 7. The quality judgment of the package shape on multiple items can be made accurately and quickly.
