Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a packing assembly of simple design which can be manufactured at low cost, which has a very long service life, and in which a mechanical shaft can be stably sealed for a long time at high reliability.
SOLUTION: This packing assembly 1 is provided with a packing adaptation unit 6 which floats on the shaft 3. The packing adaptation unit 6 is supported above a housing 2 by a ball joint assembly 5, and the ball joint assembly 5 is capable of making axial rotation and translation motion in the radial direction toward the shaft 3 and from the shaft 3. The ball joint assembly 5 is provided with a ball member 20 having a center hole, and the ball member 20 is contained in a ball socket 23. A guide element 25 to be inserted into the hole in the ball member 20 acts to guide movement of the ball member 20 in a translation direction along an axis of the center hole, and the axis of the hole in the ball member 20 is thus substantially extended perpendicularly to a center longitudinal axis of the shaft 3.
