PURPOSE: To provide a paint compsn. which has excellent chipping resistance, can be used as any of primer, intercoating paint and topcoating paint and is suitable for use as an intercoating paint for automobiles in particular, by incorporating a specified quantity of flat BaSO4 having a specified size of primary particles.

CONSTITUTION: A paint compsn. is obtd. by incorporating 2W10pts.wt. (based on the quantity of solid in the paint) flat BaSO4 whose primary particle has average major axis and minor axis of 1W10μ and a thickness of 0.3μ or below. Conventional coating film for automobiles has disadvantages in that damage due to chipping readily reaches the metallic base, so that occurrence and growth of rust after the damage are rapid. By incorporating flat BaSO4 in an intercoating paint or a topcoating paint (solid, metallic or clear paint), chipping resistance is improved and energy generated by shock can be absorbed by the coating film, whereby shock is prevented from reaching the base metal.
