PURPOSE: To obtain a paper coating composition having a high solid content, excellent in flowability and enhancing the gloss and surface strength of coated paper by blending clay or the like and a latex of a copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, a vinyl aromatic monomer or the like.
CONSTITUTION: The paper coating composition having 65-75 wt.% solid content is obtained by blending (A) 95-85 wt.% by dry weight of a composition prepared by mixing (i) 100-40 wt.% clay whose average particle diameter is preferably ≤5 μm and (ii) 0-60 wt.% one or more selected from calcium carbonate, aluminum trihydrate, titanium dioxide and barium sulfate and (B) 5-15 wt.% by dry weight of a latex of a polymer obtained by copolymerizing (i) 55-65 wt.% 8-12C vinyl aromatic monomer which is unsubstituted or substituted by 1-4C alkyl or chlorine, (ii) 30-40 wt.% 4-6C conjugated diolefin which is unsubstituted or substituted by chlorine and (iii) 4-10 wt.% 3-6C ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid.
