PURPOSE: To obtain a paper feed device and a paper feed method in which skew of paper of various sizes can be prevented by simple construction and action.

CONSTITUTION: A title device comprises a paper path 11 disposed horizontally with front and rear openings; a platen 5; a printing head 6; a paper setting part 7 provided with a pick-up roller 8 at the top end thereof; and a paper feed roller 2. Paper set in the paper setting part 7 is picked up by the rotation of the pick-up roller 8. The rotating paper feed roller 2 is made to bite into the leading end of the picked up paper 9. The paper is fed forward until the leading end of the paper 9 bites into the paper feed roller 2 by the order of 1/2 inch. After that, the rotation of the pick-up roller 8 is brought to a stop, and the paper feed roller 2 is reversely rotated. The paper 9 is fed back until the bite of the leading end of the paper 9 is released in the state that the trailing end of the paper 9 is fastened by the pick-up roller 8. The paper feed roller 2 is rotated forward, whereby the paper 9 is passed through the paper feed roller 2 to be fed onto a printing position.
