The paper feed mechanism has an edge guide 41 having a parallel guide surface 44 along a paper guide path 20 in which a paper sheet P is conveyed and a second tapered guide surface 43 which is gradually inclined to the outer side toward the upstream side of the conveying direction from the parallel guide surface 44, and a paper feed roller 24 which is rotated in contact with a surface of the paper sheet P to convey the paper sheet P along the paper guide path 20, and conveys the paper sheet while a side part of the paper sheet P on the edge guide 41 side successively along the second tapered guide surface 43 and the parallel guide surface 44. The paper sheet P is arranged at a predetermined position located on the downstream side of a first supporting point P1 at which a corner part of a fore end of the edge guide 41 side forms an upstream side end of the second tapered guide surface 43.
