PURPOSE: To decrease the frequency of replacing trays by disposing a plurality of paper storing trays vertically stacked closely and locating a selected paper storing tray at a paper supply position to be engaged with a paper feed roller elevated by a linear motor.
CONSTITUTION: A paper feeder comprises trays 1aW1e, tray moving means 2, a paper take-out guide means 3 transport means 5 for taken-out paper and a case 6, wherein a selected paper storing tray is moved to a paper supply position by a control portion 40 and a motor 14, to be engaged with a roll elevated by a linear motor at that position, and the take-out guide means 3 is set at a take-out position. This arrangement can prevent the feeder from increasing in size and increase the number of paper storing trays to be provided. Thus, the frequency of replacing the trays can be decreased or the need of replacement can be eliminated. Furthermore, the waiting time for paper selection can be reduced.
