PURPOSE: To surely prevent the double feeding of sheets of paper by detecting a fed sheet of paper by a detecting means and, then, separating a handling member from a paper feeding member while changing over the rotating direction of the paper feeding member in the reverse direction.
CONSTITUTION: In a paper refeeding device 40, as a copying signal for refeeding is issued, a conveying motor M1 is driven, a retainer board 80 is rotated to bring the top end of a sheet of paper housed in an intermediate housing part 70 into pressure contact with a refeeding belt 101, and a first sheet of paper is conveyed upward due to the normal rotation of the belt 101 while a second sheet of paper which is accompanyingly conveyed is brought into contact with a handling pad 120 and its conveyance is stopped. When the front end of the first sheet of paper is detected by a sensor SE3 and held between rollers 130, 131, the belt 101 is stopped and the retainer board 80 is restored to its original position. And, as the rear end of the first sheet of paper is detected by the sensor SE3, the handling pad 120 is separated from the belt 101 while the belt 101 is reversely driven to bring the second sheet of paper back to its original position.
