To solve a problem that since a signal during non-passage of paper money cannot be utilized, a fine level cannot be accurately detected and the identification of paper money is made difficult.
The paper money identification apparatus is provided with a slot 22 of paper money 2, a passage 23 arranged continuously to the slot 22, a carrying means 26 arranged in the passage 23, a magnetic sensor 27 attached to a wall surface of the passage 23, an amplifier 28 to which an output of the magnetic sensor 27 is connected, an identification part 32 to which an output of the amplifier 28 is supplied, and an output terminal 33 to which an output of the identification part 32 is connected. The paper money identification apparatus sets the output of the amplifier 28 during the non-passage of paper money 2 or the passage of the paper money 2 through a non-magnetic printing part as an input range of the identification part 32, sets the output of the amplifier 28 during the non-passage of paper money 2 or the passage of the paper money 2 through the non-magnetic printing part as a reference level and identifies the paper money 2 on the basis of the reference level. Consequently expected objectives can be achieved.
