The apparatus includes: a capturing unit 11 for feeding a placed paper money one by one; accumulating units 15, 16 for accumulating the paper money; a conveying unit 12 for conveying the paper money between the capturing unit 11 and the accumulating units 15, 16; an identifying unit 14 to be provided at the conveying unit 12 and for performing identification and counting of the paper money; occupancy indication inputting means 19A, 19B to receive occupancy indication; a storing unit 17 having storage areas 17A, 17B; and a control unit 10 for controlling the conveying unit 12 to convey the paper money to accumulating units 15A, 16A based on the occupancy indication via the occupancy indication inputting means 19A, and to store an identification and counting result outputted from the identifying unit 14 into the storage area 17A, and for controlling the conveying unit 12 to convey the paper money to the accumulating units 15B, 16B based on the occupancy indication via the occupancy indication inputting means 19B, and to store an identification and counting result outputted from the identifying unit 14 into the storage area 17B.
