PURPOSE: To improve the accuracy of paper sheet size detection by calculating the change in the sliding resistance interlocked to the change in the position of a guide member, storing a resistance value corresponding to the size of a paper sheet placed at first and comparing the stored value with the resistance value changed by the movement of the guide member.
CONSTITUTION: A paper sheet tray 1 is provided with side guides 2 for contacting and positioning the sides of the paper sheets and with a rear end guide 3. One of the side guides 2 is connected to the movable contact point of a sliding resistance 4 while the rear end guide 3 is connected to the movable contact point of a sliding resistance 5. When the side guide 2 and the rear end guide 3 are moved according to the size of paper sheets, the movable contact points of the sliding resistances 4, 5 move and their resistance values change. The paper sheet size and the resistance values initially set are stored in a CPU and the stored values are compared with the resistance values changed by the movements of the guides 2, 3 so that the size of newly set paper sheets may be accurately detected.
