To provide a papermaking method using a paper material including starch by which yield and productivity may be improved without damaging texture.

In a papermaking method, a high molecular weight amphoteric water-soluble polymer obtained by polymerizing a monomer mixture aqueous solution including 10 to 40 mol% of a vinyl-based cationic monomer, 8 to 30 mol% of a vinyl-based anionic monomer and 30 to 82 mol% of a copolymerizable nonionic monomer is used as a paper material including starch. A proportion of anion groups in this amphoteric aqueous polymer is effective and proper for forming an ion complex together with cationic groups included in the starch, and hence, the aforementioned problem may be overcome.
