To miniaturize a crossbelt sortation device and reduce its cost by operating one induction belt and a conveyance belt of one transport unit for a parcel shorter than the predetermined length detected at an induction station and operating one induction belt and the conveyance belt of two contiguous transport units for a parcel larger than the predetermined length.
A length of a parcel is detected at an induction station 26, and at least one induction belt and a conveyance belt 36 of one transport unit 32 are operated to put the parcel on one transport unit 32 for a parcel shorter than the predetermined length. For a parcel longer than the predetermined length, at least one induction belt and the conveyance belt 36 of at least two contiguous transport units 32 are operated to put the parcel on at least two transport units 32. Since the long parcels are rotated and aligned on the contiguous transport units 32, a wide induction belt and orientation of the parcel in advance are not necessary. Consequently, it is possible to miniaturize a device and reduce its cost.
