PURPOSE: To provide a partial fluorinated polycondensate, partial fluorinated tetracarboxylic acid used for manufacture of polyimide in particular and the dianhydride thereof.
CONSTITUTION: These compounds are 4,4'-bis[2-(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)- hexafluoroisopropyl]-biphenyl of formula I and the dianhydride thereof. The compound is produced by oxydizing the 4,4'-bis-[1-(3,4-dialkyl phenyl)-hexafluoro isopropyl]-biphenyl of formula II (R is 1-4C alkyl) with molecular oxygen in the presence of the catalyst of at least two kinds of heavy metal salt consisting of salts of Co and Mn, and salt of bromine in the acidic organic medium of 1-4C monocarboxylic acid, and the dianhydride is produced by treating this with acetic anhydride. The compound of formula II is produced by condensating, for example, are mole of dicarbinol of formula III with at least 2mol of the compound of formula IV.
