A passbook handling apparatus includes: an insertion section into which a passbook is inserted; a communication section which receives from a host device page turning instruction information for turning a page of the passbook and passbook instruction information; a storage section which stores basic software common for types of passbook handling apparatuses, specific software that is an application specific for each type of the passbook handling apparatus, and flag information indicating that printing of print information onto a page of the passbook is completed; a page turning mechanism for turning the page of the passbook; and a control section in which, when the communication section receives the print information, the print information is printed on the page of the passbook, and the flag information is set, and when the communication section receives the page turning instruction information, the basic software is executed to determine whether the flag information is set and, if it is determined that the flag information is not set, retry of turning the page of the passbook by the page turning mechanism is controlled in accordance with the page turning instruction information.
