To determine the pasting position or type of pasting direction of a magnetic stripe without needing a complicated structure or needing useless read/write of the magnetic stripe by detecting the magnetic stripe by a sensor for detecting a passbook carried, and thus reduce the processing time of the passbook.

The device includes a carrying device for carrying the passbook in a carrying passage 25, a passbook traveling monitoring sensor 11 for detecting the carried passbook; and a plurality of magnetic heads for performing read or write of the magnetic stripe pasted to the passbook. The pasting form of the magnetic stripe is determined based on a magnetic stripe detection result by the monitoring sensor 11, and the passbook is carried to a position to perform the read or write of the magnetic stripe by a magnetic head corresponding to the pasting form of the magnetic stripe.
